Not long after Brigham Young led the pioneers from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley, A.R. Whitehead migrated south to St. George.  Founded as a cotton mission in the 1850s because of the warm climate, the community grew, as did the A.R. Whitehead and Sons general store.  Eventually one of the sons, George Whitehead was appointed manager of the family business.

In 1881 George Whitehead initiated construction of a house (now the Ava House) for his younger brother, Erastus Whitehead.  At the time, George was living across the street in a house now part of the Seven Wives Inn, another quality bed and breakfast in St. George.

Unfortunately, Erastus died young leaving his wife, Josephine May Nixon Whitehead, with six children, the youngest being just six months of age.  The hardships were great, but Uncle George helped out with employment at the family business.  Josephine was further saddened by the death of a daughter, Lillian, at the tender age of 6.  Lillian is reported to have continued her residence at Ava House to this very day.  Her spirit has visited residents and guests over the years as an additional playful child in the home.  Pictures of the family are on display in the living room of Ava House.

From the moment you enter our facility, as a visitor or resident of St. George, you will find yourself in a special place where health and beauty are combined to create a totally unique experience.

The goal at St. George Day Spa is to pamper you with the most progressive and professional spa experience offered. Our day spa offers the latest state of the art facilities and most natural products and services available.

Wind and water have carved fantastic shapes into the Bryce Canyon National Park landscape: castles, towers, fins and a multitude of strange creatures. The result is a fairyland with unlimited opportunity for recreation. This is great country for hiking, horseback riding, photography, camping and other activities.

The area was named after an early settler, old Ebenezer Bryce. He saw the canyon in a different light and described its maze-like passages as a “Hell of a place to lose a cow.”

Any way you look at it, Bryce Canyon is a great place to lose yourself for a day or two of adventure.

Bryce Canyon is actually an amphitheater cut into the side of a plateau. It is located at a high elevation, on the edge of beautiful forest. Roads follow the amphitheater rim and allow easy access to viewpoints and trailheads.

The infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy roamed these parts and one of his hideout cabins is located nearby. The area offers a definite Old-West flavor: cowboys and Indians, horseback rides, rodeos and chuck wagon dinners.

There is a visitor center just inside Bryce Canyon National Park. Lodging, restaurants, stores and other services can be found nearby.

The new museum is located two blocks east of the old Field House, a 22,000-square foot structure to preserve and reveal the wealth of prehistory found within the Uinta Basin.

Outside the museum, and providing the greatest appeal to passing visitors, is the Dinosaur Garden, a prehistoric zoo of full-size replicas ranging in age from Pennsylvanian through Pleistocene. Territorial Statehouse in Fillmore is Utah’s oldest existing governmental building. In anticipation of Utah’s statehood, early pioneer Brigham Young directed construction of the building as the state’s capitol. Only the south wing was ever completed. The existing portion was finished in time for the December 1855 meeting of the Territorial Legislature, which was the only full session held in the old statehouse. In December 1858, the seat of government was returned to Salt Lake City.

Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum offers a museum store, and auditorium. Also, an All-American Rose Society Garden and picnic area adjoin the museum. Two restored pioneer cabins and an 1867 stone schoolhouse are also located on the grounds. Camping and lodging facilities are located nearby.

Day Visits: $2 per person

Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday
Holiday Closures: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day

Location: Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum is located in the town of Fillmore.
